Your family is going through it right now:
You've got a kid who has seen so many therapists they are burnt out, and you want them to know you are all on a team together.
Or you’re mid-divorce, terrified this will ruin all of your lives, and have no idea how you are going to work together in this “new normal” that everyone talks about.
There’s a big transition taking over every aspect of your day to day, and you don’t know how to support your family through it, much less yourself.
Or you’ve had a devastating loss, and you’re in no place to try and manage all of the feelings for your family, because you’re just trying to keep your head above water.
You are not sure exactly what the problem is, but your family feels out of sorts, and doesn’t know how to get back to the connection and enjoyment you used to have together.
Whatever it is that you’re experiencing, you’re beginning to notice the impact on your life:
Every day feels so overwhelming, like you are drowning from the weight of it all, and you don’t know how to get back to the surface.
You feel little or no connection with your kids. They feel like tiny human strangers that you just have to manage.
You are fixated on this situation or problem, and are distracted from other important things in your life that deserve your time and energy.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Just imagine:
Being on the same page as a family, confident that you are making decisions that align with your unique needs, and with your values, while tuning out all of the noise of what everyone tells you you “should” be doing.
Knowing what each member of your family needs to stay regulated, calm, and energized to be at the top of their game, and knowing how to help each person get that without sacrificing the needs of every other person in your home.
Doing something with your family, like playing a game, going on a trip, or just hanging out at home, and having it go well and actually be fun, not feel like you’re mid-battle waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Family therapy can help.
It may feel impossible now, but you and your family don’t have to keep living this way. You can feel like a team who love and support each other. And I can help you get there.
Family therapy helps you do 3 things:
Identify each family member’s attachment history, i.e. how you learned to connect and function in your relationships, and how that is playing out with your family dynamics in the present.
Sort out the system of your family, identifying how each member of the family is affecting others, and what needs to change for you to feel connected and cohesive.
Develop practical, actionable strategies that will help you tackle challenges together from a place of confidence and connection.
I’ll be right by your side through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and experiences. No one gets a manual when it comes to being a family. We are all just muddling through as best we can with what we know. My approach to family therapy comes from a place of hope and knowledge: knowing that you have the skills and tools to become the family you want to be, you just need a little help unpacking and applying them.
You don’t have spend your day putting out fires or walking on eggshells.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the first session like?
A: At our first session, we will do a holistic intake where I learn more about your family, your history, your relationships, what issues you want to focus on in therapy, and what environmental factors, mental health issues, medical issues, or other struggles may be contributing to your current situation. I’ll also talk more about myself as a therapist, and answer any questions you have, so you can feel sure we are the right fit.
When I work with families, we look at the family as a system, sort out each member of the family and how each person is affecting others. Then we decide on challenges to tackle all together. Your family is the team and I'm the coach giving you plays to run from the sidelines, or occasionally storming the field to help break up a fight (was that a good sports metaphor? I have no idea.)
Q: What will we talk about in sessions?
A: While each family and session are unique, some general themes that I tend to explore with families are:
Their attachment history, meaning how they were parented in early childhood, and how those patterns of interaction have continued in their relationships and are playing out in their family today.
Their values as a family, what is important to them and what isn’t, and how to sort through the barrage of advice we get these days from every direction and tune in to what feels right for them.
Their points of conflict, and how they communicate about them, identifying any unresolved issues or skills that may need improving to increase connection and communication.
Q: How do I prepare for therapy?
A: You can reflect on what you want to get out of your time in therapy. This is a space to work on whatever is important to YOU. Jotting down some ideas, or just thinking about what you want to be different when you are done with therapy is a good place to start. If you are having trouble nailing it down, that’s ok too, we can navigate defining that together.
Q: How do I get started?
A: We will start with a short phone call to make sure I’m a good fit for what you need, and answer any initial questions you may have, and then we will schedule your first appointment from there.
